Preston’s premier business centre has found an innovative way to expand due to the increased demand for office space.

Cotton Court is aiming to create mini pods on its historic mill site, off Church Street in the city centre, to help kick-start new businesses and cater for the growing number of start-ups looking for cost-effective and perfectly-sized private office space.

The Cotton Pods have been created by designers from the Frank Whittle Partnership (FWP) and will be built out of 16 20ft long shipping containers stacked over two levels in two locations on the site.

A planning application has been submitted to Preston City Council and work could begin later this year if the plans are approved.

Cotton Court owner Robert Binns says: “Since Cotton Court’s conversion to a business centre,...

Gloucester_Services_9477

One of the Frank Whittle Partnership’s flagship projects has won a top RICS award.

The Preston-based architects and surveyors were instrumental in delivering the hugely popular Gloucester Motorway Services for the Cumbrian firm Westmorland, owners of the Tebay Services on the M6.

The design and delivery of the Gloucester services on the M5 was overseen by FWP as project and cost managers with both north and southbound services opening on time and to the £40 million budget.

The RICS Project of the Year Award 2017 is in recognition of the fact that Westmorland runs the services, designed by Glenn Howells Architects, as a unique charity, the Gloucestershire Gateway Trust, which provides regular and reliable income to a host of good causes.

Preston has been highlighted as a property hotspot by Estate Agent Today, one of three North West cities to be predicted to grow.

The online news platform for residential property professionals says the property market in northern England, supported in part by the Northern Powerhouse concept, has attracted a lot of domestic and international investment, especially from China. “This has helped to drive up transactions, prices and rental values across many northern regions, led by the North West,” says writer Marc da Silva.

He adds: “With affordability in London stretched, a growing number of prospective buyers, from home movers to property investors, are now turning their attentions to England’s northern regions where prospects for capital growth look far more promising, as illustra...

Historic offices add to regeneration of city centre

Top floor office with historic sign

An historic printworks in the heart of Preston has been successfully converted into modern offices thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund’s (HLF) Townscape Heritage grant programme and the vision of the Frank Whittle Partnership (FWP).

Work has completed on the transformation of the Edwardian Lambert Brothers printing press building on Glover’s Court in a £650,000 regeneration scheme.

The project, also supported by Preston City Council and Lancashire County Council, to transform the long empty building into bespoke office accommodation aimed at small to medium size businesses has been made possible thanks to a £346,000 HLF grant.

The project is one of many planned as part of HLF’s wider funding to Preston City Council to conserve, protect and bring into use local historic buildings.
